When you’ve Done ALL That You Can Do

As a parent of a prodigal child, I can assure you that I have done everything possible to bring my child back to the ways of Christ. I have fasted many, many times in hopes that,” some things are broken by prayer and fasting alone.” Last December, I was fasting 1-2x per week, believing that my fasting was helping bring my child closer to Christ and breaking the “strongholds” in his life. Fasting alone did not seem to be working, so I then added a book about praying scriptures over your prodigal children. I prayed through the entire book in the 90 days it suggested, believing that was the answer-praying scripture daily. I was already praying morning and night for my child, but when my prayers were seemingly going unheard, I started to add fasting, speaking scriptures, and then I restored to begging and pleading with the Lord. Through the years of my child going his own way, I have had countless intercessors pray for him, believing perhaps God would hear their prayers-for I was certain I was doing something wrong because my prayers were appearing to go unanswered.

When my child first started going his own way over 10 years ago, I prayed daily but never restored to begging God for him to turn back from the things of the world. You see, if you have never had a child “wandering” in the world year after year involved in all sorts of heart-wrenching activities such as any type of addictions, homosexuality or different levels of mental/emotional instability-please don’t judge, when I say after a decade of praying, I started to beg God. I was tired and mentally and emotionally exhausted. I needed God to come through quickly, I mean didn’t He know valuable time was being wasted? I spent last Christmas without my child for the first time and that led me to do whatever I needed to get God’s attention-fasting weekly, praying scriptures, and devoting a lot of my prayer time to what I call “spiritual warfare intercession,” or taking back what the enemy stole prayers. I went into overdrive time with my prayers, fasting and scripture reading. I became much focused on my child’s deliverance that my prayer needs were virtually non-existent. I mean, I did not have time to focus on other prayer needs, my child was in trouble and he needed me to help rescue him!

After months of believing somehow if I did this or that right in praying for my child, than that would get God’s attention and He would finally answer my prayers. I just needed to know the formula for God to hear my prayers, because I needed Him to act quickly. I tried everything I knew to do! I even took advice from well-meaning people, believing maybe they had the answer, but still my child is not delivered. Oh, what is the momma to do? I want him to be all better, but the Lord says, “Let him go.” You got to be kidding Lord? Let go? The Lord showed me that letting go does not mean that you don’t love them or that you are giving up on them, it means that you are taking the backseat and the Lord is now driving-His ways and His time table! Ouch! Can’t say that thrills me to take the backseat to my child’s life, but I am not God and He knows better than I do. I have to let go of how I THINK the outcome SHOULD turn out. I have been given so many prophecies concerning my child, and in my mind they should be unfolding right about now. I am impatient and I want to see the promises come to pass in my lifetime.

I am learning to walk by faith and not by sight. If I look to long at the circumstances around my child’s life, I get depressed, anxious and fearful. I never wanted things to turn out like this, I would have hoped that by now breakthrough and deliverance would have occurred. God gives me what I call “little nuggets” of hope that he is still working. The answer to God answering our prayers, is not dong more in hopes that will move God, but trusting and resting that He hears even the tiniest of our prayers. God is moved not by us doing, going to more Bible studies, having more people pray for our situation, or fasting more, but by our faith. It takes great faith to let go of your loved one and let God take the reins. It takes great faith not to live in torment, fear, anxiety, or depression concerning your loved one. It takes great faith to have joy despite the deepest trouble in your life. It takes faith to say, “Not my will be done, but your will be done Lord.” It takes faith to believe God knows our heartache and will use it for good. It takes faith to rest and not strive to make God move on our behalf. In rest comes peace, with peace comes joy.

When your dreams and expectations have been dashed for your loved one, take hold that you are not alone and God does repair shattered dreams. I don’t know what the outcome will be in child’s life, but I know God is routing for him way more than I am-and that I have done all that I can do. Now it’s time to rest…trust…and let go and let God.

How to Have Peace in the Most Difficult of Circumstances

Surrender…Surrender all your expectations, your wants, and desires. Peace comes from not trying to figure out your problems or over-analyzing your problems. Peace comes in the most difficult of circumstances when you can truly trust God with your entire life-even if all your prayers seem unanswered or other people appear to have the very blessings you so desire.

To keep peace you must pursue it, maintain it, and walk in it. Peace does not mean agreeing with everyone, it means talking through problems and issues. When others do not want to talk through issues, then you must step aside and allow the Lord to speak to them. Some people assume that keeping peace means doing what they want you to do, but than that would make you a people-pleaser.

People will have disagreements, but it is important to open the lines of communication so that the enemy does not have an opportunity to gain in advantage. Jesus did not always go along with everyone, there are times that we must take a stand for what is right. Real peace says, “I love you enough to speak truth for the sake of unity.” Unity has to be worked on, and it is a by-product of talking respectfully and honestly.

Peace does not always come when your circumstances gets better. Actually, you will experience great peace when despite your circumstances you choose to keep a good attitude and remain hopeful. Peace means remaining calm and not overreacting when problems do occur. Peace says, “God is in control and I know that He will work this out for my good.”

Enjoy the process while you’re waiting for answered prayers and promises to be fulfilled. Lay aside every weight that is causing you to lose peace, and focus on what is good in your life. Peace comes when you stop focusing on what you don’t have, or how your life has not turned out the way you would have hoped. Never say, “I will be peaceful when…” Instead you can say,” I accept my lot in life and I am content.”

Encouragement as you Wait on the Lord

So many of God’s people have grown weary and are tired of waiting for answered prayers and promises to be fulfilled. You may have experienced trial after trial in your life and you are exhausted; maybe even lost your faith. Perhaps you have begun to doubt God and His promises and plans for your life. Let’s get honest, we all go through those times. We may wonder where God is in all of this and if He has heard my prayers.

There is a battle raging like never before, and the enemy would love you to believe all his lies and deceptions. The war is on and a sifting is occurring among God’s people. Remain steadfast and remain faithful even if you can’t see what is ahead. God is coming; He has not forgotten His people.

Renew your commitment to Christ today. Though you may be wondering what is going on, don’t despair; help is coming! Remove any and all distractions that are keeping you from your relationship with Christ. Seek Him once again and expect that He will act on your behalf. If you have been waiting months or even years for something; keep waiting! But wait in expectation of God’s promises. Your only other choice to is step subtlety in the enemy’s camp. Once the enemy pulls you in he will destroy everything you know and believe about Christ. Do not be deceived there is a battle going on, and it is to take the people of God out of the Kingdom of light.

The enemy will use your circumstances, trials, and times of waiting to destroy what you believe about Christ.

God has not forgotten you. He knows you intimately and He is passionate about you. He sees your desires and even knows your deepest longings. God does love you and wants nothing more than for you to trust Him. When you trust Him the wait gets easier. Waiting on the Lord is expecting that the promises of strength will help you rise above life’s circumstances. Be patient people of the Most High God; Jesus is coming. God is not here to fulfill every desire and longing we have but to reconcile us to Him and to bring others into His glorious reign. Our lives are not our own; but His.

Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints or grows weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
Even the youths shall faint and grow weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with the wings of eagles,
They shall run and not grow weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31

Reflection: What do you need to lay down today (unmet expectations, desires) and then ask God to renew your strength. Ask God to prepare you to align your desires with His desires and to want what He wants for your life. It is His desire to bring you good gifts, but not to fulfill all our desires of the flesh.

What to Do When You Have Difficultly Trusting God

This a difficult topic to discuss, but I believe it is one that many people struggle with AND do not discuss. If we can be honest there are times that we just do not understand God’s ways, timing, or plans. This can particularly be true if you have undergone a traumatic event, have experienced afflictions like Job in the Bible, or have been waiting for promises to be fulfilled in your life. Sometimes the very thing we have been praying for and desiring, we can see other people with those very things, and wonder why God has not answered our prayers. To hear someone say, “Thank God, He has finally answered my prayers,” can be difficult for someone to hear who is still waiting for God to come through for them. It can be easy to be cynical and even at times jealous of others who do get what they have prayed for.

We can hear our inner voice say, “Why not me?” Then of course, we get upset at ourselves for even thinking such thoughts. We want to trust God, but sometimes it seems like He is not listening to us or that He does not care. We wonder, “God why have I been afflicted so much?”

If we were raised with an absent father or abusive father, trusting God can be difficult especially when we run into trials and circumstances that appears God is not intervening. We can hear other people tell us God loves us and He has a good plan for our lives, but that can be hard to believe when you have seen much heartache and devastation over your life.

So what happens when you’re not seeing good come from your circumstances, or your prayers seem to go unheard? What happens when you feel like God has abandoned you? I have encountered many people that when they go through these times, they walk away from God. But is that the answer? Would that not make our problems worse?  I am convinced that people who walk away from God or who become Atheist, do in fact believe in God, they are just angry at God and cannot understand His ways. Can we really admit that we have been angry at God? Is it possible to say, “God, I am angry with you and I just don’t understand what you’re doing.” I believe it is possible to do so, and I believe God already knows how we feel anyway. So, if we stop trusting God and turn from Him, what is the alternative? I just know what I was like before accepting Christ as my Savior, and it was a terrible, hopeless place. What if instead, we admitted our true feelings to God, and believed that if God has not answered our prayers in the way we wanted, that He may have another plan for our lives, and that we can TRUST His ways are better than ours. What do we really know about how to orchestrate our lives? Do we really know what is best for us? Is it possible that all the hardships and trials that you have been through, God is using to strengthen you, refine you, and make you fit for His vessel? Is it also possible, that we can believe that God is a redeemer and restorer, and He will work all things out for good for those who love Him?

Can we trust a God that seems to have let us down or disappointed us? I believe the answer is yes, when we surrender what we want and realize that we are not in control of our lives. Dispelling the lies that God is mad at you, does not love you, or is against you, should be wiped from your mind. How do you know what God has planned for the things you have endured? How do you know what God will do with all the pain you have endured? And do you really know the final outcome of your life? If your life is not over, than you do not know how God will come through.

I encourage you today, to stay the course with Jesus. What is the alternative? Do you really want to live a life without God or live not trusting Him?

ADmit your true feelings to God. Believe that god has a unique plan for your life, despite the heartaches and the SUFFERINGS. ask god to show you that you can trust him. DO NOT GIVE UP ON GOD OR IN TRUSTING HIM. TRUSTING GOD WHEN YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, IS AN ACT OF FAITH. IT SAYS TO GOD, “I TRUST YOU, EVEN THOUGH I DON’T SEE YOUR PLAN OR UNDERSTAND YOUR WAYS.”

gOD DOES LOVE YOU! hE DOES SEES YOU. YOU ARE HIS SPECIAL TREASURE, AND A UNIQUE CREATION. HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU KNOW OF GOD. GOD IS GOOD AND HIS WAYS ARE GOOD. EVIL HAS PREVAILED IN THIS WORLD, BUT GOD WILL TRIUMPH OVER ALL YOUR ENEMIES. believe GOD, ASK HIM TO SHOW YOU. HE WANTS TO RENEW HIS FAITH AND TRUST WITH YOU. FOR THE THINGS THAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, WOULD YOU COMMIT THEM TO GOD, AND ASK HIM TO HAVE MERCY ON YOU. GOD IS NOT TRYING TO HARM YOU OR HURT YOU. HE LOVES YOU WITH A LOVE THAT IS SO DEEP AND WIDE.

Proverbs 3:5-6
tRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING; IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, AND HE SHALL DIRECT YOUR PATHS.
